2. Preparation

Materials List

To build the glider you need the following components:

  • Depron: Polystyrene foam sheet 3mm x 800mm x 1250mm
  • Aerosol Spray Adhesive 3M 77 or spray carpet adhesive (e.g. Gripps)
  • 50mm wide Plastic Tape e.g. Packing Tape (needs to have strong adhesive).
  • Hot Glue Gun (optional)

USA

Depron doesn't seem to be available by name, however foamboard can be used - it's just depron sandwiched between paper. See the Feedback page for tips on stripping off the paper.

Germany

The brand name is "Selitron".

Cutting the Foam

First, mark out all the sheets according to the plan below (taking care to cut along the grain). I suggest that you mark the direction of the grain on pieces 2 and 3 with a marking pen, as you will need to make sure that these pieces are attached with the grain in the right direction when you assemble the plane.

Layout for Marking-out

Next, cut out all the pieces. Use a new blade in your scalpel as this will make sure you have a clean and accurate cut. A 1 metre steel rule is the perfect tool for both marking and acting as a guide for cutting the DEPRON.

Elevons

For sections 9,10, 11 and 12 (the elevons) you need to glue the 2 pieces (9&10 and 11&12) of 3mm foam together so that it is 6mm thick. The 3M glue works well for this.

I have found that the easiest way to shape (as per diagram 4) the elevons is to use a razor plane and sanding block. It is necessary to have a new blade installed as this makes the work a lot easier. Install the blade at a cutting depth of at least 1.5mm.

I have also found that a side to side sawing motion works best. Depron can be also sanded. A good sized sanding block and 220 grit paper works well. Place the elevon on a firm flat surface to sand. The edge of the work bench works well for me.
